2012 Puppies!

The puppies are coming! The puppies are coming!

Oh, so exciting. It really is one of the highlights of our style of farming. With so many tasty, pasture-raised chickens in the field (near all those coyotes, opossums, racoons, owls, rats, and such) we need a livestock guardian dog or two. Although we have taken in strays, hand-me-downs and other dogs. I still prefer the ones I have hand-chosen from a puppy. So when we anticipate needing another dog, we breed ours. Then I get the pick of the litter.

How do I do that you may be wondering. What I mean is I get to do the Puppy Aptitude Testing and know a bit more about the dog’s personality before selecting one for the field or home. Not every dog is happy working mostly by themselves day after day with chickens for company. The rest of the litter mates are placed in good homes. Each pups personality is carefully chosen to fit in the new home, with the personality and lifestyle of the new owners.
